What if you've been fooled about leadership? 🤔

Hello, AIESECer

How has your leadership journey been so far? I'm sure that you've encountered some challenges—that's normal. You're right on track!

As a little kid, I used to think that leaders were people with some sort of superpower that enabled them to take the stand and influence people, but I have heard that “leaders are born, not made” a gazillion times, yet how true is that statement? Think about it—did Mozart instantly start composing symphonies at birth? Nope! Leadership is a skill and not an exclusive gene. No one was born with a golden leadership spoon.

Leadership is like a muscle—you work it, you grow it! Look at Oprah Winfrey: she wasn't handed a microphone at birth, but her journey from adversity to inspiration shows that leadership is cultivated. Oprah emerged from a tough childhood, battled challenges, and harnessed her communication skills. She built an empire by connecting with her audience and tackling important issues.

I also used to think that you need a flashy aura to lead but introverts can rock leadership too. It isn't just about being the loudest in the room. Charisma is an art you can learn. Elon Musk, the engineer with the gift of captivating audiences, didn't start as a natural charmer. He cultivated his charisma, learning from stumbles and embracing his flaws.

Another thing I've learnt is that variety is the spice of leadership. Leadership styles are as diverse as a playlist on your favourite music app. So, don't be too hard on yourself. See leadership like a journey where your vehicle is a willingness to learn, adapt, and grow. True leaders embrace not knowing it all. I now understand why Nelson Mandela said "I am not a saint unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying."

So, whether you're an aspiring CEO, a future team leader, or just aiming to lead your own life, remember: the journey is yours to create, so create a uniquely unique future.

Stay curious, stay daring, and keep leading. Until next time, champ!
